Art From the Hands of Babes

As you know from my previous post, I am a high school teacher in "my other life."  Every morning I get to school early to take a brisk walk around the halls for winter exercise.  Another colleague joins me and we have wonderful conversations.  I especially enjoy walking through the elementary hallways where beautiful artwork enriches the environment and always catches my eye.  I am truely amazed at how refreshing their work is and I am astounded by what our talented art teacher helps them produce such Picassos. I finally brought my camera along to show you. Just look at these snow people created by 2nd graders!Elem_art_010Snowman_cardhat

And the birch trees - these are 4th graders!!Elem_art_019_3 Elem_art_018

Abstract prints by 1st graders - I believe they used simple potatoes to print with, but we could all take a lesson in their colorful designs.  Elem_art_016Elem_art_closeWhy do we adults get so uptight about our art?  WE need more free abandon in our work.  We need to have FuN!

Go get a potato and make something wonderful this weekend!

OMG!! These are just incredible! I would be thrilled to hang any one of them in my home. What do they feed those kids in Amherst?? Thanks for sharing...off to buy potatoes. xox

I'm stunned at how beautiful their artwork is at their age! Right now, they leave me in the dust! I don't remember doing that sort of thing in the 4th grade.

Those are great! A few weeks ago we were at an airport and I saw jazz collages made by elementary kids and they looked like posters made by Graphic Designers. I wish I had taken a picture. I was so impressed. I agree with Kay. I dont recall doing that level at that age!

Wow--impressive! I believe you are right about getting too uptight in our art. We must need to remember to just let it flow! I love the birch trees, all so beautiful!
